Located on the south coast of England, in the county of East Sussex, and around 20 miles east of Brighton, is the town of Eastbourne.
In 1315 a market charter was granted to Eastbourne. However, its history remained uneventful up until the Georgian era. In 1780 four of King George III's children visited Eastbourne during the summer. This created interest in the town, however it wasn't until the arrival of the railway that significant growth occurred.
In 1849 the railway arrived in Eastbourne, courtesy of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. Today this is situated on the East Coastway Line from Brighton to Hastings. The next station north is Hampden Park, which is a junction between destinations to the east and west. It is home to one of the busiest level crossings in the country.
During the 1850s two local landowners were largely responsible for the development of Eastbourne. William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire and John Davies Gilbert built broad roads and seafront parades. Between 1866 and 1872 Eastbourne Pier was built. It opened in 1870, two years before construction was complete. The pier is around 300m (or 1000 ft) long. Just opposite the pier are the famous Carpet Gardens - a floral display consisting of around 26,000 plants.
Between 1884 and 1886, following rapid growth in the town, Eastbourne Town Hall was built. A competition had taken place to find a suitable design for the building. The winning architect was William Tadman-Faulkes with his Renaissance style design.
During the Second World War, Eastbourne was one of the most bombed places on the south coast. 174 residents died and 474 houses were destroyed.
Today Eastbourne remains a popular seaside resort, attracting around five million visitors per year.
