Urbanisation is gripping people into migrating to urban places for better economic opportunities. City infrastructure must grow more robustly to meet the demands of smart cities and their inhabitants. The need of the hour is not just better infrastructure; we also need green and sustainable infrastructure to respond adequately to the challenges of climate change. Municipal Corporations and urban local bodies must play a critical role in achieving urban development goals for which they require more financial autonomy. Local self-governance motivates individuals by providing them with a larger role in decision-making and witnessing the impact in their immediate neighbourhood. Therefore, local bodies will have a much larger role to play in this agenda. A new World bank report recommends strengthening Public-private partnerships for local bodies to generate more funds. A new RBI report has suggested that for sustainable development and financing infrastructure, issuing of municipal bonds can be a great way to unlock finances for urban management. This infrastructure is necessary to continue to progress societies and improve living standards. Let’s understand the importance of making cities a better place to live.
