In February 2021, researchers from the University of California, Irvine, Tata Institute for Genetics and Society (TIGS), UC San Diego and India, and Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology, India, published the results of their work on mapping the complete genome of the malaria vector, Anopheles stephensi. Their efforts unearthed over 3000 genes that had previously evaded scrutiny. On 16 March 2021, in the sixth edition of TIGS' knowledge series Science Serving Society, key scientists involved in the research, Dr. Mahul Chakraborty, Dr. Arunachalam Ramaiah, and Prof. Suresh Subramani talked about their insights from this landmark achievement that paves the way to better understand mosquito evolution, migration patterns, population ecology, transmission capacity, and insecticide resistance.
