The kettlebell is one of the oldest and most consistent functional strength tools in human history, with intricately carved kettlebells being recovered from as far back at the 3rd millennium BC in ancient Iran.
After that, we see soldiers and martial artists in ancient China and Okinawa trained using stone weights known as ‘locks’ in the same manner as the kettlebells of today.
Around that time the ancient Greeks were lifting, swinging and jumping with stone weights known as ‘halteres’ the same way we use kettlebells today.
Later, metal kettlebells shaped like actual bells appear in medieval Germany, relatives of the famous Russian agricultural weight known as the ‘girya’ that farmers used for improvised strength training.
We then see them appear in use by American strongmen in the 19th century.
