The definition of the phrase wax and wane is simple. (Undergo alternate increases and decreases.) I feel this song is the first time Elizabeth wrote about life as a musical artist much like the songs Pepper-Tree and Road River & Rail that came later. She sings of how she carries her prose while along with Robin and Will take an optimistic outlook that the 'devil' of life's difficulties 'might steady' against them while their fortunes as music makers wax and wane. Up to the wee wanes they take their gin shots and lick their alms, (which is food or money given to poor people) while they hope for success and laugh in the faces of those personal devils, that just might steady after all.
The lyrics for this are pretty common knowledge and the Deftones did a clear sounding cover so here it is.
Audio has been lightly remastered from the 1991 CD release.
