This video is about Proteinuria Diet: Diet For Patients With Nephrotic Syndrome, Proteinuria, Nephritis Syndrome, etc. which is a trending topic in the kidney disease community.
A proteinuria diet is a diet meant for someone who has excess protein in their urine. This generally happens to people with kidney disease although their can be other reasons too. Protein finds its way into the urine if the kidneys are not operating properly. Protein is usually filtered out of urine by glomeruli, which are tiny loops of capillaries (blood vessels) in the kidneys. The normal measurement for protein found in urine is less than 150mg/day. By getting your urine tested and finding it to be above these levels, you should consider making some dietary or medical changes. Excess protein in the urine affects about 6.7 percent of the United States Population. Advanced proteinuria can lead to a host of negative effects like abnormally frequent urination, shortness of breath, fatigue, and nausea.
In this video, we talk about some dietary measures you can take to reduce the protein in your diet if you have kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome, or nephritis syndrome. These include following a renal diet, which are foods that are low in sodium, potassium, magnesium and protein. Read the labels on food before consuming to get a better idea of these amounts. Limiting carbohydrates is also recommended. They should only take up roughly half of your diet. Limit protein as well to only about 15 or 20 percent of your diet. Last but not least, make sure to increase the amount of healthy fruits and vegetables in your diet.
Not only will increasing the fruits and vegetables in your diet help with proteinuria, it will help your overall health. Be sure to check out our other videos on kidney disease related diets.
