Lake Maggiore is a large lake positioned on the south side of the Alps. It is the second biggest lake in Italy. The lake and its coastline are divided between the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy and the Swiss canton of Ticino. Located halfway between Lake Orta and Lake Lugano, Lake Maggiore stretches for about 65 kilometres between Locarno and Arona.
Today we show you The Borromean Islands a group of three small islands located in the western arm of the lake, between Verbania to the north and Stresa to the south. They are a primary local tourist attraction for their charming surroundings.
Their name derives from the Borromeo family, which started acquiring them in the early 16th century (Isola Madre) and still owns the best parts of them (Isola Madre, Bella) today.
Isola Bella, named for Isabella, countess Borromeo, was originally a widely barren rock; after first developments and constructions, opened by count Carlo III between 1629 and 1652, his son Vitaliano the 6th built a fascinating summer palace, bringing in vast quantities of soil in order to build up a system of ten balconies for the garden.
Isola Madre, the biggest of the three, is also well-know for its gardens, which have been maintained since about 1823 in an English style. Its palace, though uninhabited, is remarkably furnished with 16th- to 19th-century Italian treasures and paintings.
Isola dei Pescatori or Isola Superiore is now the only populated island in the archipelago. It has a fishing village, which in 1971 had a population of 208.

Il Lago Maggiore è un grande lago posizionato sul versante sud delle Alpi. È il secondo lago più grande d'Italia. Il lago e le sue coste sono divise tra le regioni italiane Piemonte e Lombardia e il Canton Ticino svizzero. Situato a metà strada tra il Lago d'Orta e il Lago di Lugano, il Lago Maggiore si estende per circa 65 chilometri tra Locarno e Arona.
Oggi vi mostriamo Le Isole Borromee un gruppo di tre piccole isole situate nel braccio occidentale del lago, tra Verbania a nord e Stresa a sud. Sono una famosa attrazione turistica per i loro panorami affascinanti.
Il loro nome deriva dalla famiglia Borromeo, che iniziò a possederle all'inizio del XVI secolo (Isola Madre) e ne conserva ancora oggi le parti più affascinanti (Isola Madre, Bella).
L'Isola Bella, che prende il nome da Isabella, contessa Borromeo, era in origine una roccia lacustre; dopo i primi sviluppi e costruzioni, iniziati dal conte Carlo III tra il 1629 e il 1652, il figlio Vitaliano VI che vi costruì un affascinante palazzo estivo, trasportando grandi quantità di terreno per realizzare un sistema di dieci terrazze per il giardino.
L'Isola Madre, la più grande delle tre, famosa per i suoi giardini, curati dal 1823 circa in stile inglese. Il suo palazzo, sebbene disabitato, è straordinariamente arredato con tesori e dipinti italiani dal XVI al XIX secolo.
L'Isola dei Pescatori o Isola Superiore è oggi l'unica isola abitata dell'arcipelago. Ha un villaggio di pescatori, che nel 1971 aveva una popolazione di 208 persone.
