STORYLINE
Pope Francis took part in the final vigil service of World Youth Day on Saturday night on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach with a reported 3 (m) million people in attendance.
The pontiff headed into the final hours of his first international trip riding a remarkable wave of popularity: By the time his open-sided popemobile reached the stage for the vigil service Saturday night, the back seat was piled high with soccer jerseys, flags and flowers tossed to him by adoring pilgrims lining the beachfront route.
Saturday night's service preceded Sunday's morning Mass also taking place at Copacabana.
The vigil and Sunday Mass were initially scheduled at a countryside venue in Guaratiba 30 miles (50 kilometres) west of central Rio de Janeiro, but had to be relocated to Copacabana due to heavy rains that turned the field into a muddy pit.
Pope Francis told the pilgrims this may have been God's way of telling them something.
"Since we had to cancel, due to bad weather, the realisation of this vigil at the Campus Fidei (Latin for Field of Faith) in Guaratiba, couldn't God be telling us that the true field of faith is not a geographical location, but that it is us?" Francis told pilgrims, who applauded in response.
"Yes it's true, each one of us, each one of you, me, everyone. Being a missionary disciple means knowing that we are the field of faith of God," he added.
Despite Francis' critical assessment of the state of the church in Brazil, the pope's reception in Rio has shown that he can draw quite a crowd.
