UPDATE - lesson for the rest of the track is now live on my channel - check it out
Welcome to my video lesson for Steve Vai's amazing new tune Candle Power which he released to celebrate his 60th birthday. It's an addictively catchy track and Steve set himself a challenge to play outside of his comfort zone (clean tone, no whammy, no pick etc) yet it still sounds, to me at least, classically Vai. I'm just covering the first minute in this lesson before things get too crazy and the new 'joint shifting' sections comes in (update: after a number of requests I do plan on doing the rest of the track in a few weeks when I finish some other things, so stay tuned!). Check out his full video to see this in action. @SteveVaiHimself also @MusicisWin has released a great video on the joint shifting technique so check that out if you want to learn more about it. Even without it though there are still some fantastic licks and tricks to learn.
UPDATE: I have added a link below to the backing track I made to play along with in the video. It is very rough, just a simple drum loop and a vague attempt at the bass line, but feel free to take a copy if it helps.
Without gushing too much, I have to say that Steve is probably one of my all time favourite guitarists and has influenced me more than any other. I was 14 when Eat 'Em and Smile was released and it blew my mind. In pre internet days, in a small northern UK town I did not get to hear such a wide range of music and I'd just never heard a guitar being played like that. Throughout my teens I followed all his releases and learnt many of his tunes note for note. He remains one of the best there is and is a genuinely all round amazing musician and human being. So I feel honoured to be able to attempt this transcription and I hope you enjoy and get something from it.
Donations:
I happily do all this for fun and have no plans to try to charge for these transcriptions. It's not my music so I have no right to do that. However I do get asked by people if they can make a donation or leave a tip and if you feel the need to do that then my PayPal details are below. Please don't feel under any obligation to do so but obviously I'm grateful for anything received. Any funds I do receive I will put towards improving my video making equipment to try and provide better quality videos in the future. (and yes my first name is Philip, don't ask ;))

You can get a free copy of the tab and the backing track via the link below. Hopefully I've got the transcription pretty close but I'm sure there are a few errors in there, they're all unintentional (sorry Steve!!)
If you enjoy please please please click like, share, subscribe so you can keep up to date with future videos etc. and also check out some of the previous transcriptions on my channel. There is a link to both my Facebook and Instagram pages and would be great if you would also follow me on there.
