Locals in Golaghat district of Assam were in for a fright on Monday evening as a massive fire broke out at the hydrocracker unit of the Numaligarh Refinery Limited. According to reports, an explosion was heard soon afterwards.
The fire and safety department personnel of the NRL and fire tenders were rushed to the spot. They battled the blaze for almost an hour before they were able to bring it under control.
Kajal Saikia, General Manager of the NRL's Human Resouces department, confirmed that there were no casualties.
"We are always prepared for the worst. We have our own fire and safety department. Every year, we organize mock drills to prepare ourselves, so that we are able to deal with these situations on a war footing," he said.
A day later, on Tuesday, Saikia informed EastMojo that the fire was contained in the specific area, and hence, damage was not too widespread. Mostly, wiring and cables had been damaged in the blaze, he said, adding that investigations have officially commenced to determine the actual cause of the fire.
