Peppermint oil might be a safe alternative treatment for irritable bowl syndrome. 9 randomized placebo-controlled studies have found peppermint oil to be a safe and effective treatment for IBS symptoms with an improvement in abdominal pain.
Most studies had people take peppermint oil capsules for at least 4 weeks. There were a few side effects reported, such as a peppermint taste, peppermint smell, and a cooling sensation around one’s bottom. The longest trial lasted only 12 weeks, so we don’t know about long-term efficacy, but the research is promising.
The studies used peppermint oil capsules, but what about peppermint tea? Well it’s never been tested, but a quarter cup of fresh peppermint leaves has as much peppermint oil as some of the capsule used in the research studies. Your could easily grow it on your window seal and blend into a smoothie.
Always remember supplements and superfoods can interact with certain medications and disease states so make sure to talk to your health care provider and pharmacist before supplementing.
If you choose to supplement, make sure to buy a product that is USP, NSF or BSCG verified for purity and potency so you aren’t buying impure, diluted, or contaminated products.
