Daegu is a highly industrialised harvest city, with around 39,239 farmers out of 2.5 million citizens (1.3%) and its industry is just 0.3%. Starting from February 18, 2020 there have been a total 7,047 confirmed cases with 187 deaths. The city decided to support their farmers in order to overcome this hard time.
First, the city initiated a farm-products buying campaign where city officers were encouraged to purchase local agricultural products. It was also promoted an online sale for the public. A total of 38 tons were sold, amounting to US$417 million. Also, the city organised a regular local food market in order to allow the public to buy fresh products.
Second, due to online classes at schools, farmers who provided ingredients to school lunches lost their market. The city provided US$30 worth of food ingredient voucher to all 256,000 students. And the city has provided daycare students at primary schools with seasonal fruits as snack twice a week, with the purpose not only of buying local farmers’ products but also of offering children a healthy diet.
The third project was aimed at flower farmers whose sales have drastically dropped due to Covid-19. The idea is to deliver a small bouquet of flower or a plant to each office of the city hall every week. This project helps flower farmers but also city officers who were stressed by quarantine work.
Fourth, the city provided special fund to 1,336 farmers who lost their income drastically due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With a total of $1.3 million, the special fund wants to ease farmers' losses due to halt of school lunches.
Last, the city provided healing spaces (green spaces) to citizens. In this way participants can relieve their stress through urban farming activities. Through all these projects the goal is to help citizens including farmers, relieving them from their economic burden and stress.
