Designed by Shim-Sutcliffe Architects, Ace Hotel’s Toronto outpost strikes a careful balance between context and modernity, delivering a unique hospitality experience. This FRAME Awards video shows why it’s a winning space.
Excelling in the Hotel category – though also submitted for Material – Ace Hotel Toronto sits in the heart of the Canadian city’s Garment District. The first property from Ace Hotel in Canada, the Shim-Sutcliffe Architects-designed building combines the area’s industrial heritage with layered visual references, giving way to a deeply warm, material-driven environment. Although the structure is new, it’s firmly rooted in the 20th-century setting. ‘Many of these buildings have disappeared over time, and the project itself really tries to a very important urban ensemble in this neighbourhood, recalling in effect these warehouse buildings of the past,’ explains Brigitte Shim, cofounder of Shim-Sutcliffe Architects. Jury members celebrated how decisions from the hotel’s material use to its hyperlocal elements contribute to a nostalgic yet contemporary feel.
