LET'S CELEBRATE: IT'S OUR BIRTHDAY!
We are delighted to have received these messages from some of our friends.
It is the official third anniversary of The Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in the heart Dublin's Grand Canal Dock and what a fantastic 3 years it's been! The theatre has gone from strength to strength firmly establishing itself as Ireland's best loved theatre. So it's time to get your party hats out as we are planning on celebrating our birthday all week here at the theatre!
To coincide with our 3rd birthday we are also thrilled to announce a trilogy of brand new shows coming to the theatre this year. First up one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats will play from 21 August - 7 September, followed by feel good international sensation Priscilla Queen of the Desert which opens on the 15th October for two weeks and finally something exceptionally special Heartbeat of Home the long anticipated sequel to Riverdance will have its Irish premiere in September here at the theatre. We are so excited!
The Bord Gáis Energy Theatre commenced building in January 2007 and the curtain rose for its inaugural performance on March 18 2010 with The Russian State Ballet featuring stars from the Bolshoi performing Swan Lake and since then we have welcomed everything from ballet, musicals, family shows, drama, concerts, comedy, orchestral and opera many of which would not have been possible to stage in Ireland before.
Just a few of our favourite highlights from the last 3 years include everything from West End and Broadway smash hits Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Dirty Dancing, Cameron Mackintosh's Phantom of the Opera and Oliver! Sister Act, Grease, and the world premiere of Peter Pan to the staging of the Amnesty International tribute concert to Burmese Democracy Leader Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as the home-grown success of a new opera company staging Tristan and Isolde for the first timein 50 yearsand Irish musicals Jerry Springer the Opera and Anglo The Musical.
We have also had world class ballet and opera and Irish and International musicians such as Bon Ivor, Janet Jackson, Christy Moore, Aimee Mann, The Waterboys, Josh Groban, Norah Jones, and Jools Holland as well as one of the biggest names in comedy Bill Bailey, and special performances from Derren Browne and acclaimed creative conference Off Set.
Stephen Faloon, General Manager of The Bord Gáis Energy Theatre said:
'We are delighted to report that we have had over 1.5 million people through our doors in the last three years and we expect another 600,000 visitors this year alone as we welcome even more brilliant theatrical experiences. I'm so excited about the coming months because now we can build on that success, take risks and most of all welcome the massive shows Irish people once had to travel to see.
Disney's The Lion King will be taking the theatre over from April to June and we are so excited to welcome it! Some brilliant drama is on its way with The Full Monty in April, The Mousetrap in July followed by The Old Vic Theatre who makes their Irish debut with the hilarious Noises off. International comedy supremo Billy Connolly will be here for 4 performance only in April. For dance lovers Birmingham Royal Ballet returns in July with Giselle and hot on its heels we're sending you back to the 60s as Hairspray makes an eagerly awaited return visit to the theatre! And lastly, the spellbinding and multi award-winning musical Wicked! opens on 27 November for an eight week season. We could not be more excited to be bringing this show to Dublin for the first time'.
We continue to look forward to welcoming you soon to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and presenting the magic of International Theatre in its rightful home!
