More about this video:
Everyone should care a little bit more about how they use type and the thoughts that went into designing those fonts you know and love. Type is like the clothes that your words wear, and just like you want to go out into the world and look presentable, you want your written messaging to do the same things.
These three type design books will help you take your work to the next level by understanding and having a deeper appreciate for how the typefaces were designed. Plus, you will start to learn and understand the lingo and vocabulary used in designing type.
Type Matters by Jim Williams is an amazing, in-depth, entry level book for those interested in getting to know the history of typography and the different elements of type. It is a quick read and extremely worth your time.
Thinking With Type is a book that is much more involved and will give you examples as well as a semi-exhaustive history about how type was created and the inspiration behind it, as well as certain cases where you will want to use specific types of fonts (etc.)
Lastly, Typographic Design is more of a text book style read, where you will learn more of the history as well as use-case scenarios and portfolio/case-studies on typefaces and they have been used in some of the most iconic campaigns throughout history. It is not a quick read, but it is well worth it.
