Toyota celebrates a half-century of its Corolla with the 2017 lineup, which packs new standard equipment and safety features and includes a limited-edition 50th Anniversary trim. With almost 50 million sold around the world over the last 50 years, the Toyota Corolla is the world’s best selling car model. But one of the reasons for the Corolla’s success has always been its cost effectiveness, and its segment has gotten packed with worthy competitors that would love to take some of Toyota’s market share.
All Corollas use a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder that puts out 132 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque with EPA estimates of 27 mpg city, 36 highway, and 31 combined. A version of that engine re-tuned for efficiency powers the LE Eco trim, where it puts out 140 hp and 126 lb-ft and gets estimates of 30, 34, 32. The Eco trim’s single transmission option is a continuously variable transmission our reviewer found loud and unsatisfying, but other trims can opt for a 6-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.
