I always thought that this song was called 'Awfully Different Without You'. In fact it is called 'Don't Get Around Much Any More', but my mistaken title is every bit as good, I think. It was written by Duke Ellington (notes) and Bob Russell (words) but often gets attributed elsewhere because it has been covered so many times. Often, 'Any More' is written 'Anymore' but I'm British and we don't hold with that sort of thing.
Pretty much every time I have heard this, most often at a dance, I have interpreted the first line as 'Mister Saturday Night' and this makes me think that it is some awful song celebrating someone wonderful, especially since most of the music accompanying it is brassy and upbeat, but when one hears the lyrics properly, they are rather touching.
I like playing sad songs on my uke, because sad songs are slower and so much easier to play.
