Hear from Professor David Edwards, Professor of Neonatal Medicine, Imperial College London, consultant in Neonatal Medicine Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Dr Denis Azzopardi, Reader in Neonatal Medicine, Imperial College London, as they talk about their work to reduce brain injury in #newborn babies.
For the last 20 years they have been working on reducing the number of babies that suffer #braindamage because of problems around the time of birth.
They started off by working in the lab to find out what the mechanism to solve this issue would be. After finding the mechanism they moved onto #clinicaltrials to try and find treatment to stop these problems happening.
Experimental studies for several years showed that cooling the brain by 3-4C after suffering a lack of oxeygen reduces swelling and inflimation in the brain and reduces the severity of the brain damage. This led onto clinical trials that proved treatment with cooling for 72hrs reduces brain damage and increases the chances of survival with a normal outcome.
