The only landlocked territory of Australia, the other six states and one Territory all have coastlines. Welcome to the flag of the Australian Capital Territory, or ACT for short.
Adopted in 1993, this is not like the state flags of Australia which all have a defaced Blue Ensign but is similar in design to the Northern Territory.
At the hoist on a blue field is the Southern Cross as represented by the five white stars, at the centre of the goldfield fly is a modified coat of arms of the city of Canberra.
While ACT had been in existence since 1909, it never had its own flag, so a competition was arranged and in 1992 the government selected four options which then the public had a vote. It was designed by Ivo Ostyn who later spoke out against his design stating that he preferred a simpler flag than the inclusion of the coat of arms.
