C-3PO is Star Wars’ voice of negativity, frustration, and fear. What’s the story function of this? It’s funny, and he has a cute relationship with R2-D2, but the way our favorite protocol droid is written seems to cater to something more specific. If we think about the challenges of the sci-fi genre as a whole, the fear and frustration is perfectly suited to solve the ever-present problem of immersing a new audience in an unfamiliar alien world. The seriousness with which C-3PO relates to this fantasy world and the humanity of his interaction R2 give us a perfect path for immersion in this galaxy far far away.
