Then… abortion was illegal. Heather Booth is the founder of JANE; and Patricia Novick, Eleanor Oliver, and Martha Scott were members of that group, an underground network led by women that provided low-cost illegal abortions—more than 11,000 of them—during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The women’s story is the subject of the current HBO documentary, “The Janes.” In 1973, the US Supreme Court, Roe v Wade, legalized abortion.
Now…abortion is again illegal. The momentous decision of the US Supreme Court in 2022 to overturn Roe v. Wade allows states to make abortion illegal. Women are being forced to bring a pregnancy to term even at perilous costs to her and
her family, as well as to society at large. The Janes are reuniting as champions for a woman’s right to choose.
The panel of “original Janes” will reflect on their historical part in the pro-choice movement, correct misconceptions about the original mission of the Janes, explain how the right-to-abortion is not a single issue, and recommend actions to regain women’s rights to privacy and liberty.
