This video, is an aspect of the exhibition "The Alchemy of Black Joy" running from September 7th - October 14th, 2016 at National Black Theatre (2031 Fifth Avenue New York , NY 10035)
This exhibition officially launches National Black Theatre (NBT) into our 48th season themed “In Pursuit of Black Joy”, featuring the photography of Peter Cooper and the interactive Alchemist wall that seeks to explore the various algorithms of Joy. Like the whole season, through this exhibition NBT is asking how Joy is manifested within our culture? How do we, as community, celebrate our beauty, our complexity and our body when we are faced with the unrelenting assault on our identity? How and what do we pursue individually to express our own wholeness and autonomy?
Black Joy in particular, is the process of turning an oppressive emotion into one that lifts us instead of chains us, feeds us instead of draining us, challenges us instead of defeating us; an exploration of the Spirit of liberation; “undead, unchained, and fearless”. Black Joy dances in the face of armed officers, sings in the presence of death, and shouts down systems of terror. The pursuit of Black Joy is the science, secret and mystery to our Soul. It is our alchemy – it is our birthright.
Through the journey of the exhibition and the whole season, we seek to uniquely activate each visitors Joy center as both a tool of activism and self-care. The time is now! Join the club
