How to use OBD-II Scanner
Types of OBD-II scanners
The market for trouble code scanners have a significantly wide range of products to offer. They go from about $20 to thousands of dollars. Some are manufacturer-specific, most are universalized for many different makes and models.
The most common ones are:
• Bluetooth transmitter modules – cheap, mostly limited functionality (~$20 to $100)
• Low-priced corded plugin type – basic functionality, can read common codes, some with more advanced functions like reading “live data” for some vehicle sensors (~$40 to $130)
• Mid-range corded plugin type – Can read common codes plus more advanced codes pertaining to SRS and ABS systems. Also has “live data” functionality with the ability to read a larger number of vehicle system sensors (~$130 to $400)
• Professional grade – Depending on price point, these have the capability to read nearly all codes including manufacturer-specific ones throughout a broad range of makes and models. Many live data sensor functions are available as well as an oscilloscope on some. Some even have the capability to reprogram certain attributes of the PCM. (~$400 to several thousand $$)
Why would I need a scan tool?
• If your car displays a check engine light on the instrument cluster, a trouble code will be associated with that light. A capable scan tool will be required to read these codes as they appear. Many auto parts stores can check codes for free, which is helpful, but you are limited to the scan tools they have on hand. Choosing your own scan tool and the ability to read and erase codes (or more) at your convenience is what makes owning one much more favorable.
• Just to add- the check engine light is not to be confused with a “service engine soon” or “maintenance required” light that is found on some models, that illuminates when a routine maintenance practice is due for the vehicle (such as an oil change).
