From back-to-back episodes of ANIMANIACS. These are also reruns, this time from the series' first season after the Warner Brothers and Sister left Fox for the new WB network (and Chicago's WGN Superstation in markets that lacked a WB affiliate).
WPIX went on the air June 15, 1948 as New York's second independent station and the television arm of the New York Daily News, then owned by the Tribune Company. Its many personalities over the years included Officer Joe (Bolton), Jack McCarthy (who hosted the station's St. Patrick's Day Parade coverage for 43 years), Bill Britten (the New York performer of Bozo the Clown), Chuck McCann (before he became a voice actor; incidentally, ANIMANIACS had one of his many credits in that field), and Joya Sherrill. WPIX also originated the children's series THE MAGIC GARDEN and an iconic version of the Yule Log that's aired annually since 1966. Since 1977, it has also aired the St. Patrick's Cathedral's midnight mass every Christmas Eve. Its most well-known logos are the Circle 11 and the 11 Alive insignia, which would be used for a far longer time frame by NBC affiliate WXIA-TV in Atlanta. Channel 11 was divorced from the Daily News in 1991 but continues to originate broadcasts from the paper's former 42nd Street building to this day. It was affiliated with the WB from 1995 to 2006 and with the network's successor, the CW, from then onward and is the largest by market size that is not owned by CBS. In 2019, after 71 years of Tribune ownership, channel 11 was taken over by the E.W. Scripps Company, which divested it to Mission Broadcasting after Scripps acquired Ion Television, which owned WPXN, channel 31.
