Travel Documentary about Mt Kilimanjaro - by Surlaroutophile (08/2024)
Booking the trip from my comfortable office in Mallorca with Tanzanie Authentique. Flying to Tanzania. Getting picked up at the airport by a cab and drove to Springlands Hotel in Moshi. Getting a briefing by Amini, my Kilimanjaro experienced guide. Getting extra stuff needed for the ascent. Driving to Marangu Gate with the team of 6: guide, assistante guide, cook and 3 porters. Registering at the Gate & weighing all bags for porters.
Starting the 4-5h ascent with a 900m difference to Mandara Huts through a rainforest, literally in the rain. Reaching the Huts at 2700m, freshening up & relaxing with a hot tea. Having dinner and chatting to other climbers. On the second day, checking out the view on Mt Kilimanjaro from Maundi Crater. Hiking through moors, seeing tall trees becoming small shrubs. Being amazed by the Dendrosenecio Kilimanjari tree that can only be seen at a certain altitude on Mt Kilimanjaro. Arriving at the second camp, Horombo Huts at 3720m. Freshening up, chilling and chatting with fellow travellers. Experiencing the first signs of altitude sickness on the third day, hiking through a lunar landscape called “alpine desert”. Having lunch at a picnic stop wondering how I’m gonna get to the camp. Reaching Kibo Huts very tired, with a lack of appetite, nausea and headache. Deciding to leave at 4am instead of midnight because of my situation.
Starting the ascent to the crater and marvelling at the sunrise around 6am. Drinking as much water as I could as well as a delicious and strong ginger and lemon tea. Trying to eat to regain energy. Reaching Gilman’s Point (5685m) after a tiring 7h hike up. Relaxing and regaining strength before the final ascent to the top. Arriving at Stella Point (5756m) and loving the crater views. Passing through snow and ice on the way to the peak. Having to use my father-in-law’s hiking poles to complete the hike. Setting foot at 2:15pm on Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point of the highest mountain in Africa, also considered “the tallest free-standing mountain in the world” - as not part of a mountain range. Crying warm tears of pride with my guides. Thanking loudly Bielet. Going back down to Kibo Huts like a zombie and helped by the guides - without whom I’d still be up there. Sleeping like a baby. Getting up at 6am to hike down 30km and 3000m difference back to Marangu Gate. Getting my certificate. Listening with pride and happiness to my team’s celebration song. Driving back to the hotel and enjoying a pizza. Sleeping very comfortably in the hotel room. Driving to the airport early morning with my breakfast box. Flying back to Madrid with shaking legs.
