BACHMANN 35-205 GWR CLASS 94xx 0-6-0PT no. 9402.
Keith has two of these to perform the usual ‘magic’ upon. He was looking forward to them. Not for long! Why? Simply, these truly exquisite models DON’T WORK PROPERLY. So, what’s the problem? The pickups have inadequate tensility. They are not strong enough to maintain complete & uniform pressure upon the backs of the wheels over the lateral range of each axle. As a result, the engines stall on many points and any pieces of less than perfect track. Yet another case of an over priced model loco performing badly ‘out of the box’. What a shame. And how utterly aggravating for those of us who can’t or don’t want to ‘fix them ourselves’.
What’s the answer? DC? Send them back! DCC? Send them back!
Alternatively, if you really want to improve upon this lacklustre manufacturers’ performance and have time and patience (to say nothing of ability) in abundance, you can (in DCC) add a wondrous component called a ‘stay alive’. This will generally allow most Chinese seemingly non quality controlled productions to manifest themselves as reasonable efforts of technically digital & electrical self propulsion. They do take up space; something the 94xx doesn’t have much to spare!
Keith tailor-made one from 8 x 220uF tantalum capacitors via a Zimo SACC16, and fitted it into one of the pannier tanks. The decoder is a Zimo MX658N18, the loudspeaker is factory fitted (!) The sound recording is Keith’s own from 9466 at the South Devon Railway.
