Sedation dentistry is an excellent treatment option for patients who experience high fear of the dentist.
In this video, we cover the benefits of sedation dentistry and how it can help patients feel more relaxed and comfortable during dental treatments.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry refers to the administration of sedative medicine to help ease a patient’s fears and calm them down before and during dental procedures. During the sedation treatment, patients experience a dream-like state where they remain conscious yet relaxed.
What Are the Types of Sedation Dentistry?
We offer three types of sedation dentistry to help keep you comfortable and at ease during dental treatments.
🦷 Oral Sedation - Oral sedation involves a tablet taken about an hour before a dental appointment.
🦷 Inhalation Sedation - Inhalation sedation involves nitrous oxide, better known as ‘laughing gas.' Breathing in nitrous oxide gas can reduce sensitivity to pain and help patients feel more relaxed.
🦷 Intravenous (IV) Sedation - Intravenous sedation, otherwise known as 'sleep dentistry' or 'twilight sedation', involves a sedative injected into the arm. The sedative makes the patient feel calm, drowsy and relaxed almost instantly.
What Are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
✔️ Reduced anxiety
✔️ The dentist can often complete the procedure faster
✔️ Reduced gag reflex
✔️ Pain relief and decreased discomfort
✔️ Ensures that patients who typically avoid dental procedures get the treatment they need
Are There Side Effects Of Sedation Dentistry?
Inhalation sedation wears off quickly and involves no side effects. Although IV and oral sedation will likely leave you a little drowsy after, there is minimal downtime.
If you opt for oral sedation or IV sedation, you’ll need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your appointment and keep an eye on you for a few hours. You cannot drive or operate machinery for 24 hours after the appointment.
