In 1964, a B-52 Bomber Lands Without Its Tail.
On January 10, 1964, a B-52 bomber was observing turbulence effects during low-level flights over the mountainous terrain. Over the Rocky Mountains range, the turbulence greatly increased, and the crew decided to discontinue the flight. At 14,300 feet, the B-52 was hit by clear air turbulence, or CAT. The bomber lost its tail due to this CAT hit, but the crew was unaware of this. They attempted to control the jet, employed air brakes, and lowered the rear gear. The B52 is stabilized now. Soon, an F-100 joined them, and the pilot told the crew that their bomber's tail is missing.
