This is my DIY raku kiln design (NOT a tutorial - there are plenty of step-by-step guides available online). I used an old honey drum and made a few tweaks to the design by adding extra insulation blocks OVER a layer of ceramic blanket. Also, using a venturi burner is highly recommended (will struggle to get above 900C without it). The resulting kiln is super hot... almost TOO hot! My first test-fire quickly climbed to 1050C (my ideal glaze temp) but it took some further tweaking to reach a gradual climb of approx 35min per firing schedule (with a little soak early at around 300). I have a feeling this could go hotter if I pushed it but I will mostly be using low-fire glaze and traditional raku/saggar techniques. So far it's exceeded my expectations and has ignited my passion for clay sculpture and experimental glazing.
