Albert started his sophomore year of high school in a suburb outside of Chicago, Illinois as an honors student, a football player and a wrestler. He ended his sophomore year with a mystery illness that left him unable to attend classes, play sports or hang out with friends…because he was vomiting more than 30 times a day. It would take years of hospital visits, specialist appointments and extensive medical tests before Albert finally got answers. Those answers would come from several states away at Nationwide Children’s Hospital ([ Ссылка ]) in Columbus, Ohio. It’s where pediatric gastroenterologist, Dr. Desale Yacob, was able to officially diagnose him with rumination syndrome ([ Ссылка ]), a rare condition that causes food and liquid to be regurgitated shortly after it is swallowed. For Albert, having an accurate diagnosis meant there was hope he would finally able to eat and drink again when he began treatment at Nationwide Children’s.
The Rumination Syndrome Program ([ Ссылка ]) at Nationwide Children's is one of the only programs of its kind in the United States. Offering multiple levels of treatment, the multidisciplinary program focuses on both long and short-term goals that allow the patient to retrain the stomach to hold food again. Albert would spend several weeks working with the rumination program’s team of specialists to overcome the condition that had ruled his life for two years. Each day he worked one-on-one with a psychologist to engage in “gut-directed therapy” to help retrain his stomach to accept meals rather than reject them. Two weeks after Albert started treatment, he was able to do something he hadn’t done in more than 1,000 days. He sat down with this family for a meal and he didn’t vomit.
