If you’re new to structures, you’ll probably going to listen some basic terms like struts and ties. That’re actually two of the most critical components of any structures.
Do you know you can easily identify the struts and ties in a simple bridge?
Yes! And in our today’s video we’re going to explain what are struts and ties, what’s the difference between them and obviously how you can identify them by just looking at them.
Now if you think of a column, what forces you can imagine are being imposed? Well, it can’t be tension. Ideally, all columns are meant to bear compressive forces and are thus called struts. In fact, a strut in engineering terms is referred to as a short column i.e. the one that won’t have any buckling…or…bending I mean.
So, the basic difference between struts & ties is the direction of forces. I’ve made another video about difference between compression and tension. Go and check that as well if you’re new to stresses.
Anyhow, coming back to ties, imaging a spring being pulled. The spring is going to resist that tension and in that case we can say it’s a tie. Another example can be of a truss bridge element that is resisting tension.
So in a nut shell, we can say the strut is a structural member in compression while a tie is a structural member in tension.
