Seaspan Shipyards in North Vancouver has built the largest gantry crane in Canada in order to build very large non-combat vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy.
Seaspan Shipyards president Brian Carter spoke to the Journal of Commerce about the process of building and implementing the crane, and the continued work going into the structure before in comes online later this year.
A ceremony was also held to name the crane after a contest amongst North Vancouver School District students resulted in the crane being called "Hiyí Skwáyel," the Squamish language translation of "Big Blue."
