STORYLINE:
Russian soldiers, war veterans, cadets and patriotic youth groups on Tuesday recreated the legendary Red Square parade of 1941, simultaneously paying homage to Russia's World War II effort and marking the anniversary of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution.
The November 7, 1941, parade in Moscow commemorating the revolution was the first to be staged following Russia's entry into World War II, and was an act of defiance against Nazi German forces that had advanced to just some 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Red Square.
Formed up in ranks for the parade in front of Soviet leader Josef Stalin, the troops marched straight from there to the front.
Latterday parade participants on Tuesday were dressed in period costume, some riding horses and others marching in step across the wide square, to the strains of military music from the period.
Military cadet Parviz Sotialdiyev said; "Our grandfathers and great-grandfathers also marched in 1941 during the parade and went to defend Moscow, it is a very significant date, you can't forget it."
The GUM department store, which stands across from the black granite mausoleum holding the embalmed remains of Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin, was decorated with long red banners and bore the dates 1941-2006.
