Food loss and waste is one of the most critical issues of current food systems, with more than one-third of food being lost or wasted along the food supply chain.
This problem is particularly urgent in Rwanda, where more than 15 per cent of the population does not have enough food to eat. Nevertheless, up to 40 per cent of the total food produced here is lost or wasted, causing significant economic, social and environmental impacts.
This video shows the collaboration between FAO, the City of Kigali and the Rwanda Rural Rehabilitation Initiative to create a Task Force on Food Waste Reduction and Management to address these issues.
This collaboration is in line with the FAO Framework for the Urban Food Agenda and the Green Cities Initiative, as outlined in the recent strategic programme (2022-2031) developed by FAO.
