This is the theatrical trailer for John Singleton's directorial debut, the seminal 90s drama classic "Boyz N The Hood", the movie that singlehandedly gave birth to coming of age hood drama phase in 90s black cinema. The movie was released through Columbia Pictures on July 2, 1991.
Set between the years 1984 and 1991, it follows the story of young Tre Styles (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), who lives with his single mother Reva (Angela Bassett) in the rough and tumble city of Inglewood, California, located near Los Angeles International Airport. After getting into a fight at school with a fellow classmate, his teacher calls Reva and informs her of the incident and that while Tre is highly intelligent, he has a volatile temper and lacks respect for authority. Alarmed and worried for his future, Reva sends Tre to live with his father Jason "Furious" Styles (Laurence Fishburne) in the Crenshaw district of South Central Los Angeles.
Furious instills tough love, proper values and respect in his son, which his friends doesn't have and he correctly predicts how they will end up. Tre is soon reunited with his best friends, half-brothers Darin "Doughboy" Baker (Ice Cube) and Ricky Baker (Morris Chestnut), and their mutual friend Chris (Redge Green). After Furious and Tre return home from a day of bonding and fishing at the ocean, they are saddened to see Doughboy and Chris being arrested for shoplifting.
Seven years later, things have changed for the four friends. Tre has grown into a mature and responsible teenager working at Fox Hills Mall in nearby Culver City. And like his father Furious predicted, his other friends, having no parental support and structure, ended up by the wayside. Doughboy has returned home from his latest stint in jail, now a Crips gang member and drug dealer. Chris is now paralyzed and in a wheelchair as the result of a gunshot wound. While a star running back at Crenshaw High School, Ricky still lives with his mother Brenda (Tyra Ferrell), his girlfriend Shanice (Alysia Rogers) and their infant son Ricky, Jr. Tre also has a girlfriend in Brandi (Nia Long), who lives across the street from him.
Tre longs to leave the gang infested streets of L.A. behind to attend college in Atlanta, while Ricky and Doughboy's choices lead them all down to road to tragic, irreversible consequences.
