Here’s a technique that can be used to help improve serratus anterior muscle activation and shoulder blade control.
When reaching overhead, the scapula must move through 60 degrees of upward rotation. The middle and lower fibers of serratus anterior are described to be upward rotators of shoulder blade during arm elevation.
When scapular upward rotation is limited, increased stress may be placed on shoulder structures, including the rotator cuff and long head of the biceps tendon. Sensitization of these structures is thought to be associated with various pathologies, with the most common being shoulder impingement or subacromial pain syndrome.
