Slideshow of the Guided Bomb Unit 28 (GBU-28) in U.S. military service.
The GBU-28 (Guided Bomb Unit 28) is a 5,000-pound laser-guided "bunker buster" bomb. The GBU-28 was nicknamed "Deep Throat". The The GBU-28 was produced originally by the Watervliet Arsenal, Watervliet, New York in a hurried effort. The bomb had to be designed and produced in three weeks during Operation Desert Storm to penetrate underground, hardened command centers. Two of the bombs were dropped in Desert Storm by F-111s. A new Enhanced GBU-28 augments the laser-guidance with Inertial navigation and GPS guidance systems. The GBU-28 can be carried by the B-2 Spirit, F-15E Strike Eagle, and F-111 Aardvark aircraft.
