After a frustrating end of the season (NLDS was full of terrible calls & the worst umpiring crew imaginable) - I decided to dive deep into the world of umpiring. How widespread are these poor calls? How could the playoff assignments not be merit based?
Using Statcast data collected from Baseball Savant, I was able to calculate the worst misses of the year. This video includes the following pitches:
- Between 4/1/21 and 4/30/21
- Called Strikes
- A strikeout with a total miss of 3+ inches OR
- A total miss of 4+ inches
A miss can be inside/outside (horizontal - which is calculated based on the width of home plate + a baseball) or low/high (vertical - boundaries of zone are set by statcast and may not align with what is shown on the broadcast). If a pitch is slightly high and slightly outside (say 2" each) - the total miss would be 4".
If you want more content like this, please like / comment below. I'll be posting a similar version for worst "ball" calls & will most likely continue to post the rest of the months, and versions for the division / championship / world series'.
Thanks for watching!
