STRANDED DOLPHINS SAVED THANKS TO SPCA AND CARING CAPETONIANS
28 JULY 2022 – Sandy Bay in Cape Town was the site of a dramatic rescue early this morning as inspectors from the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s wildlife division, helped by the City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management, Shark Spotters and staff of Leeukop Estate worked together to rescue two stranded bottlenose dolphins.
Teamwork paid off as the rescuers kept the dolphins wet, comfortable and upright before they could be returned to the water with the assistance of the NSRI, which dispatched one of its boats in support of the rescue mission.
More than 10 people had to help move the heavy dolphins into the sea on stretchers.
“We were elated and relieved that the rescue was successful,” said Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse.
“We are grateful to everyone who pitched in to help – teamwork saved these beautiful animals. We’ll monitor the area as a precaution in case they beach again.”
