2023 PREDICTIONS
It’s that time of year again, when we share what we think the year has in store for the watch industry. Which watches are in? And which watches are out? The Watch Talk team shares their thoughts.
Watches & Wonders Geneva is set to take place this spring from March 27th to April 2nd, now’s the perfect time to speculate what Rolex has planned for the year.
2022 RECAP
Before we begin, let’s take a quick look at 2022’s biggest watch-collecting moments. First, the Air-King 126900 hit the market, sporting a new case with crown guards and a shiny new movement – the caliber 3230.
Many collectors were also surprised to see the first official left-hand GMT Master II in the form of ref. 126720VTNR. Also known as the “Destro,” the new model features the date and crown on the left side of the case.
Ref. 126720VTNR was also the first time we’ve ever seen a black and green ceramic bezel from Rolex.
Rolex released the first fluted bezel in 950 platinum, which debuted under the Day-Date 40 and Day-Date 36 collections.
The Yacht-Master 42 and Yacht-Master 40 are again available in yellow gold, featuring a black Cerachrom bezel and Rolex’s patented Oysterflex bracelet.
2022 also brought us a brand-new Rolex model, the Deepsea Challenge. This watch is Rolex’s most water-resistant watch yet, boasting an 11,000-meter depth rating.
2023 PREDICTIONS
On to our predictions for the year. We think Rolex will likely add more precious metal options to their professional series. Will Rolex roll out a full Everose gold Yacht-Master? Could we possibly see the first two-tone Air-King for 2023 as a follow-up to last year’s Air-King upgrade?
DAYTONA
The Daytona will celebrate its 60th anniversary this year, so we expect big things for Rolex when it comes to their beloved chronograph. Perhaps a new green dial is in store to join the existing yellow gold ref. 116508? Maybe in a new shade of green or with a different metal finish? Either would be exciting to see.
CELLINI
Rolex recently discontinued most of the Cellini lineup, save for the Moonphase model. With only one model remaining, we can only guess that Rolex might add new offerings to the lineup for 2023. For example, it would be interesting to see a Cellini with a non-round case.
As you might recall, the brand fully embraced the uniquely shaped case trend decades ago with models like the King Midas and Prince. It would be interesting to see the Cellini return to its roots.
MILGAUSS
We had big hopes for the Milgauss in 2022 but to no avail. The Milgauss has historically been an odd man out within the Rolex catalog. Rolex even discontinued the series for a few decades due to low sales.
However, since the collection was revived in 2007, we haven’t seen many notable upgrades made to the Milgauss. Rolex added the striking Z-Blue dial to the lineup in 2014, but nothing worth mentioning since.
We would love to see Rolex furnish the Milgauss with a new movement with better anti-magnetism to match the upgrades made to the movements in the rest of the brand’s portfolio.
Or, dare we say it, Rolex will discontinue the Milgauss altogether?
It would also be interesting to see Rolex add new metal finishes to the series, such as lightweight titanium.
Only time will tell which moves Rolex will make this year, and hopefully, we don’t have to wait longer than the 2023 Watches & Wonders in Geneva to find out.
