Welcome to my review of the Oura Ring generation 3 after one week. I've used the ring every day and night so far. Later on in 2022, I'll publish a full review. This review therefore only covers my findings after 7 days of use. Here's what I found:
✅ My initial conclusion? I should have held on buying this ring, actually!
✅ One discovery during the unboxing process is that it's basically the same-sized ring as the generation 2 Oura Ring. Yes, some new sensors have been added but otherwise, the new generation 3 Oura Ring does fit on the generation 2 docking station for charging
✅ Also, heart rate monitoring is now extended over the day, but only every 5 minutes and only when you're resting. I didn't like that even though it's a problem limited by technology. And yet, the info of your heart rate during activity are the most important moments of the day, arguably
✅ You can see a nice graph of your heart rate throughout the day and night in the App
✅ The ring functions more as a health and stress and sleep tracker than a fitness tracker though.
✅ Naps don't show up perfectly in the sleep time screen either, which is a bit of a bummer. The benefit is that the generation 3 Oura Ring does pick up naps, contrary to the previous model, and gives you bonus points for doing so!
✅ The green LEDs now used for measurement kind of annoyed me because it can affect circadian biology in a small way. The light is really bright if you're in a pitch-black room.
✅ The new generation 3 Oura Ring does hold up exceptionally well at the gym, with limited scratching
✅ I dislike that there are many unconfirmed activities during the day, that I need to log. Also, some activities are incorrectly tracked and logged as "high intensity", such as moving my lawn. This makes the 3rd generation Oura Ring less useful as a fitness tracker
✅ I like the Oura Ring generation 3 still for tracking health, stress, sleep, and recovery. This was true for previous versions as well. These measurements are still tremendously beneficial for athletes, just not as a direct fitness tracking such as heart rate during your sessions
✅ The Oura App still has all the usuals like the readiness and sleep score, activity progress, and more. Readiness is still the most important score for me, telling me when to go slow and when to push. Some options like tags and the activity tracker I still don't use to this day
✅ Both the HRV and body temperature trend functions could be improved so much. There are many other trends to break down though, such as sleep stages, sleep efficiency, time in bed, latency, bedtime, and more.
✅ The Oura Ring is very helpful because you can so easily see the effects of health choices such as drinking alcohol or sleeping poorly or overworking.
✅ Workouts and meditation sessions can also be tracked - you can manually tag and insert them to be considered as such, although heart rate will always be tracked.
✅ Bluetooth (EMF exposure) can be disabled, fortunately!
✅ Daily tracking, with a readiness and sleep score per day, allows you to get more insight into what happened every single day, instead of a trend. You get this data every single day after syncing. In the daily tracking sleep you can click on all the terms to get an explanation as to what it means.
✅ In terms of sleep quality, you can see your awakenings, the amount of REM and deep sleep per night, and when these moments happen. Usually those recordings are pretty adequate.
✅ The Oura Ring generation 3 sells for $299, $399 if you order the stealth option and there's a $5 a month subscription. I've used that subscription and it only adds the data that you already got in the Oura Ring generation 2. I don't like the new pricing as I don't see whether the price increase weighs up to the new features.
✅ Conclusion: the ring is a bit of a disappointment!
