Guardian of the Underworld, Anubis is one of the most well-known deities in ancient Egyptian mythology. He is often depicted as a man with a jackal's head, and he was revered as the god of death and embalming. Anubis played a vital role in guiding the souls of the deceased into the afterlife and judging their worthiness to enter the realm of the dead.
As the protector of the underworld, Anubis was responsible for guarding the entrance to the afterlife and ensuring that the souls of the deceased were properly prepared for their journey. He oversaw the embalming process, which was essential for preserving the body for the afterlife. Anubis was also the god of mummification and was often depicted holding the tools used in the embalming process, such as a scalpel and a crook.
In addition to his role as the guardian of the underworld, Anubis was also responsible for weighing the hearts of the deceased during the judgment of the dead. It was believed that when a person died, their heart would be weighed against the feather of Maat, which represented truth and justice. If the heart was found to be heavier than the feather, it would be devoured by Ammit, a fearsome creature with the head of a crocodile, the body of a lion, and the hindquarters of a hippopotamus.
