Get off to the right start with building a model or asset library for Maya. There's a gazillion free models on the internet many of them being a .3ds format. This tutorial by Stuart Christensen will show you a workflow for the conversion process of .3ds files to the .fbx version by using the FBX Converter. Although there is a plug-in for Maya to natively open .3ds files, we will be using the FBX converter to accomodate users of previous Maya releases. Above all, you will convert and scale these models to the proper size, you will also learn some tricks about what to do with problems when importing converted models. This is basic must know stuff to to establish good work habits and consistent results with a somewhat unpredictable process. Get with the flow!
