Many fitness gurus on YouTube appear to all do the same exact form on the bench press. While this form certainly is effective for using the chest muscles, they seem to not be too aware of the risks.

Essentially, when one brings the bar all the way to their chest while bench pressing, their elbows are extending behind the body. When this happens, one is placing excessive stress on their AC joint. Over time, this can cause issues such as weight lifters shoulder.

This condition, also referred to as Distal Clavicular Osteolysis, is where the bone at the edge of your clavicle experiences erosion. Over time, this can lead to weakness and AC joint pain in your shoulder.

Luckily, this is easy to prevent. One thing you can do is to stop the bar two inches above your chest. Another thing you can do is bench press on the floor. Finally, you can fold a couple of towels and stick them on your chest when you bench press.
