(Note: in the original manuscript, no tempo indications are given for any of the four movements in this sonata; the indications given above are my “best guesses” as to the tempo of each piece.)
Here we have another extremely obscure composer about whom we know next to nothing. All we do know, as a matter of fact, is that there is a manuscript containing six harpsichord sonatas dated 1758, and that says they were composed in Pamplona (Spain). Here the first little mystery: the name of the composer, stated in the manuscript as “Signor Abbate Girolamo Sertori, Maestro di Capella Parmiggiano”. From this we can deduce that Sertori must have been am abbot (clergyman in minor orders). But why would a “Master of the Parmesan Chapel” be in Pamplona, Spain? Well, in Italian, “Parmiggiano” refers to two adjacent regions of Northern Italy, Parma, and Reggio Emilia. Now: A certain Don Carlos, the son of King Philip V of Spain and Elizabeth Farnese of Italy, became “Charles I Duke of Parma“ in 1731. He didn’t live there long, but soon handed over the rule of that region to his brother Philip. Thus, Charles was Spanish, yet ruled regions in Italy. Could this be why, at least in 1758, an abbot-.musician who worked for the Parmesan court was spending some time in Spain (Pamploma)? This is all just speculation on my part; it could simply be that his religious superiors in Italy sent him to an abbey in Pamplona for some reason or another. Given the scarcity of data on this musician, we shall probably never know. The six sonatas in the Sertori manuscript are, I find, most delightful, and are well worth a listen!
