Coral reefs, like The Great Barrier Reef, are crucial ecosystems that are threatened by climate change🐠 Right now, there is as much coral genetic diversity on the reef as there will be in our lifetimes, because every time there is a bleaching event, we are losing coral. Taronga’s Reef Recovery Program uses cryopreservation and biobanking to help secure the genetic diversity of coral on the Great Barrier Reef for research and restoration efforts and is made possible with the help of our partner Citi Australia, as well as a collaboration with the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program, Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water #ReefTrust, and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
Taronga’s Conservation Science Team recently travelled to Queensland for the coral spawning season, where they banked material from new coral species to add to Taronga’s CryoDiversity Banks – the largest cryobank of living coral cells in the world. In this video, Dr Jon Daly provides an update on the Reef Recovery Program, straight from the Conservation Lab. #forthewild
