In this last video from our time in Albania, we are sharing our experience of the crowded beautiful Albanian beaches during high season, some must-try Albanian foods and drinks, and the overall daily life while on holiday in Albania in summer of 2022. Below I've listed some of the foods you must try while in Albania as well as the best beaches and when to visit them during high season.
The most popular beach without a doubt is Plazhi Ksamil 7. You probably see this beach when you google Albanian beaches and while it is stunning, it's a private beach and EXTREMELY crowded. Not to mention because of its popularity you can find that the costs of the chairs and umbrellas at this beach are astronomically higher than the surrounding beaches. While it's stunning to see the Maldives-esque water, try going at around 6:30 AM. Around 7:30 AM tourists start to arrive with their screaming kids and huge pool floats ruining that Instagram shot you may be after. ;)
BEST BEACHES:
A beach I recommend that's beautiful, still slightly crowded but acceptable is "The Last Bay". Away from the heart of Ksamil but still walkable, this beach has affordable chairs and clear water along with a rocky coastline that you can snorkel at!
Another potential beach to look into depending on your needs would be "Puerto Rico beach" or "Lori Beach" although the latter was more of a beach club vibe.
In summary, regardless of the beaches you visit, you will face crowds if visiting during August (something we didn't know due to poor research) and it's hard to get any room to breath where all the extra beautiful beaches line the coast. I also read that apparently the Albanian government sold all the stunning beaches on the Ksamil coast to clubs, bars, and restaurants which you can see. I really think it's unfortunate to commercialize all the natural beauty of the coast but I understand that may be good for their tourism industry.
FOOD:
Here are some must-try foods you should eat while in Albania:
Petulla: fried dough, sweet treat usually with chocolate and powdered sugar on them)
Burek: (similar to the greek Spanakopita) full of spinach and cheese wrapped in flaky phyllo dough
Seafood: it's the coastline after all--try some of the fresh caught clams or fish!
Korca beer: a pretty typical beer but Albanian nonetheless
Risotto: due to it's proximity to Italy, the Italian influence is strong in some of their restaurants and the risotto was incredible!
