Piriformis syndrome is when a muscle spasms in the buttock region causing pain in the glutes. The piriformis muscle originates at the anterior surface of the sacrum and inserts at the superior border of the greater trochanter of the femur. Our sciatic nerve loves to make its way through this muscle. When it spasms....ouch!
