On July 1, 1984, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) introduced the new PG-13 rating. As you probably know, it means parental guidance is suggested for those under the age of 13. Two hot summer movies, "Gremlins" and "Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom", made many parents question whether the PG rating (parental guidance) was really strong enough for these films. R (restricted for those under 17) was kind of harsh, but PG seemed a little too relaxed, considering "Indiana Jones" showed a beating heart that was pulled from someone's body.
