She’s appeared on well-known television chat shows, travels the world with her job, and has even met former US President Barack Obama. But for Marvel Comics editor and director Sana Amanat, there’s one career highlight that outshines them all.
“I’ve had many career highlights, and Marvel has given me many fantastic opportunities, [but the ultimate highlight for me] is when I see girls coming up to me dressed up as Ms Marvel,” she tells MySalaam. “It will never grow old; it will always make me tear up, and make me very emotional because that’s all I wanted – to be able to create something that the next generation of girls can respond to and connect with so that they felt less alone.”
Sana is, of course, referring to Kamala Khan, a recasting of the original Ms Marvel character, and this time the superheroine is Muslim-American. Created by herself and fellow editor Stephen Wacker, writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona, Kamala Khan became Marvel's first Muslim character to headline her own comic book.
